LOST Challenge of the Week: “LA X”

1 02 2010

Happy LOST week everyone!

I’m excited just to type that!  Can you believe that the long, agonizing wait is finally over?  I’d like to say that it’s hardly felt like 8 months, but it definitely has.  Going to Comic-Con was fun, and discovering LOST Chronology was a nice surprise, but the real deal starts tomorrow, and I simply can’t wait!

Alright, so before I get to this week’s challenge, let me point you to a couple of things to whet your appetite for tomorrow’s premiere.  You may have seen these already, but they’re worth pointing out for anyone who hasn’t yet.  First, check out ABC’s site for 4 minutes straight from the premiere itself.  It’s the first item that loads in their viewer, or at least it has been for the past 24 hours.  (If not, the video is called “Message in a Bottle”, and I’m sure you can find it on their site.)  Go here to check it out:  http://abc.go.com/shows/lost

Next is something just a bit more meaty: a trailer from the upcoming Season 6.  Not sure if the footage is all from the premiere, or if it’s from the first set of episodes, but man is it cool!  Definitely got me all geeked out for the premiere!  Check it out below:

Was that awesome or what?

Alright, with those two sneak peeks out of the way, let’s get to this week’s challenge.  Here’s what I want to ask you, and some of you may have had a bunch of time to have already think about it:

What is the significance to the title “LA X”?  Is it as simple as the LOSTies landing in LAX as Jack had hoped?  Is there more to it than that?  What about the space in-between the LA and the X?

Any theories you have about the upcoming season are also welcome.  In fact, let me share one of mine with you in this space.

As you can see from the 4-minute preview, it looks as though there’s going to be some kind of “reset” or “re-boot”, with the LOSTies not crashing on the island and possibly/probably landing in LAX.  So here’s my theory, in a very succinct fashion: Although we’re going to see the LOSTies as if they never crashed on the island, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that it’s not related to the Jughead detonation.  Instead, it’s going to be a parallel universe completely unrelated to what happened with the bomb.  In fact, I think the “how” will be largely lost in the storytelling.  At a point, we won’t care anymore how we got to see this thread, or why, but instead, we’ll be interested in the end result.  Because what we’ll be seeing will be what will happen to our LOSTies (and possibly the world) if our characters never crashed on the island.  And I’m betting that it won’t be a pretty ending.  It’ll give us a consequence if the LOSTies don’t succeed in whatever they’re up to in Season 6…something we wouldn’t know if we didn’t see this alternate timeline.

Anyway, that’s my outlandish theory prior to Season 6.  Please share yours (or any thoughts about “LA X” or Season 6 in general) below.  Looking forward to seeing what all of you have to share!  See you back in this space later in the week with my recaps for the premiere!

The “X” stands as a roman numeral- this we’ll see when the “Oceanic Six” concept is expanded to include some characters who died in the previous timeline, ie, Libby, Boone, Charlie, Michael, perhaps even Ana Lucia. We already know we’re headed back on 815 and it looks like they get by the electromagnetic disturbance- but they DO see the island from the plane, seeing the statue in full.
